In March 2010, IES scholars' application for a project titled "Nations and States: a study for European Nation States" was approved by CASS. It was designated as one of the "Key Research Projects at CASS" and was financially supported by CASS. Prof. Tian Dewen, Head of the Division for Social and Cultural Studies at IES, acts as the leader of the project. This project is expected to study the relationship between "nations" and "states" by looking back to the long process of nation-building in Europe . It will also explore the "ethnic issues", national identity, ethnic confrontations, national disintegration and the government policies towards these problems. It will try to study the issues in theoretical and historical perspectives. On June 29, 2010, the group held its first seminar that officially kicked off the project. It is to be completed by the end of 2011 in the form of a book. The Division for Social and Cultural Studies at IES focuses on the study of European social structures, social policies, social ideology, social movements, cultural identity, cultural policies, and cultural exchanges between China and Europe .
